peaking from London, where he is currently finishing off his thesis – only 7,000 words to go –Christian Thompson muses with me on being the inaugural Charles Perkins Oxford Scholar recipient, the art of shape-shifting through self-portraiture, seasonal affective disorder and the nature of belonging. His artistic impetus has been to take “very traditional kinds of ideas and bring them into a contemporary context.” His interests have delved “beneath the surface of popular culture, and not the things that are.” He believes a culture moves forward by “questioning these perceived binaries, whether it’s male and female, black and white, gay and straight, or urban and regional.”
